Navigating The Great Outdoors

July 8th, 2007

Getting away from it all and going back to the basics with nature on hiking trips or other outdoor expeditions can be quite rewarding. Fantastic adventure awaits those who give outdoor activities a try. You get to experience a life totally far away and removed from the way we know and understand the concrete jungle that we live in. In the outdoors, one can expect to experience something new every time and this has the ability to add depth and perspective to mundane life.

However, precisely because the outdoors can be something that is totally alien to one, it is important to be able to know how to navigate your way around properly to avoid getting lost.

You definitely don’t want to get lost in the wilderness because it can get pretty scary and dangerous and at the very least, it can be quite an inconvenience. Especially if you are beginner at outdoor activities, be sure that you are quite prepared for your expedition with all the navigational tools that you will need to find your way through and not get lost.
Don’t underestimate a trip and think that you won’t get lost especially if you think you are quite familiar with the area. All outdoor pros know that having the right equipment and knowing how to use them for navigation is quite essential to any trip. The three important things you will need to be able to successfully navigate the outdoors are a map, a compass and a GPS device.

While a GPS device can be quite superior over a compass, you will need to still have a compass on hand as a back up. Because your GPS is an electronic device, it can run out of power or for some reason, just stop working. Therefore, it is very important to have a compass with you even though you have a GPS device with you.

It isn’t enough to have these important navigation devices with you. Before heading out on your trip, you need to learn to use them and become familiar enough with them to be able to successfully navigate your way. Especially if you won’t have a guide on the trip, do take the time to enroll and take lessons for outdoor survival training to be able to learn the ins and outs of the outdoors as well as how to use navigation equipment properly.
