Proper Care of Your New Fish

November 5th, 2007

Right from a young age, many of us crave to have a fluffy companion. Many of us end up getting cats, dogs or perhaps a rabbit. However, today, fishes of exotic colors and looks are also becoming extremely popular as pets all over the world. The requirements of these little creatures are not many. Yet, if you wish to increase the life of your buddies and ensure their happiness, you do need to take care of a few things.

First of all you need a good-sized fish tank. You can add fresh water or salt water depending on the requirement of species of fish. Fish also need good food and plenty of room to play around. Once you are sure you can provide the fish all these items, you can go ahead and shop for a good fish tank.

You need to choose a good fish tank, as it is likely that your fish will call it their permanent home. Usually, fish tanks are made from glass, though now a day many different materials, which are friendly to fish, are also used. The most important thing you need to determine while selecting a fish tank is its size. If you are fond of having large sized fish, it is obvious that you will need a fair sized fish tank. However, do be sure that you have enough space to house a big fish tank. You also need to understand that you will require greater maintenance for a big tank.

Another consideration is the number of fish you would like to see in your tank at a time. No matter what sized tank you have, or how small the fish are, see to it that you don’t induce crowding. This is especially true if you have fish of different breeds in the water. The other thing that you do need to be careful about while selecting a fish tank is the decoration and lighting system. Don’t choose a tank just because it has beautiful posters. Remember, your fish will not care about the undersea pictures, but will prefer if the lighting system is good and if the tank allows the positioning of filters in a better way.

When you buy a fish tank you also need to be very sure that it can easily accommodate all the accessories that ensure the comfort of the fish. You may have to put in oxygen filters, good quality sand or coarse soil, some aquatic plants and lighting system. Try and measure the size of the tank for the fish, once the equipments are all fitted in the tank. You need to do this in order to determine how much space is used up by the accessories themselves. Once you are satisfied and get a nod from your goldfish, you can go ahead and buy a home for your finned friends.

By following these simple steps, you can ensure a long living fish tank for you and your family to enjoy for years to come.
